Commercial HVAC System Filter Types and Maintenance

06/15/2016

It’s pretty well known that every spring you should have routine maintenance done on your commercial make up air unit, but oftentimes people fail to regularly change their systems air filter. The filter is extremely important because it prevents dust and other debris from harming your AC’s internal components. When the buildup on the filter is bad enough, it will impede airflow and wreak havoc on your system’s energy efficiency. So, what kinds of filters are there and how often do they need to be replaced?

Permanent filters

I’m sure you’ve figured out that a permanent filter does not need to be changed. This type of filter should be cleaned at least every two months. Our recommendation in general is to avoid using permanent air filters. They tend to be a haven for mold, fungus, and bacteria.

Panel filters

There filters are effective and inexpensive. You can find them at pretty much any hardware or big box store. The biggest downside is that these filters need to be changed often – at least once a month.

Pleated filters

These polyester filters are the most efficient at filtering out particles, but they are a bit more expensive. Fortunately, they need to be replaced only every three to six months as opposed to monthly. The MERV rating of the filter should be low enough to not put too much strain on the HVAC system.
